Don’t Blame Amy and Tina—the 2021 Golden Globes Were Always Going to Be a Disaster

<p>When an awards show bombs, the first person everyone wants to point a finger at is the host. But there was little <a href="https://time.com/3665538/tina-fey-amy-poehler-bill-cosby-rape-joke/">Tina Fey and Amy Poehler</a> could’ve done to save Sunday’s <a href="https://time.com/5942951/golden-globes-recap-2021/">78th Golden Globe Awards</a>. (Can you imagine how much worse it might have been if the producers had invited <a href="https://time.com/5759355/golden-globes-2020-recap/">Ricky Gervais</a> back for another serving of sanctimony?) And no one knew that better than the emcees themselves. “Could this whole night have been an email?” Fey asked a small, socially distanced audience of first responders and essential workers at New York’s Rainbow Room. Then she answered her own question: “Yes!”<br /></p>

<p>In fact, Tina and Amy (who represented the West Coast branch of the industry at the Beverly Hilton) did a pretty admirable job for two people co-hosting a primetime telecast from opposite sides of the country. Their opening monologue had some solid jokes about the ever-shrinking distinction between movies and TV (Poehler: “TV is the one that I watch five hours straight, but a movie is the one that I don’t turn on because it’s two hours.” Fey: “If you’re like, ‘Mario Lopez is surprisingly good in this,’ that’s TV”). Fey aimed a perfect backhanded compliment at <a href="https://time.com/5892989/the-trial-of-the-chicago-7-review-netflix/"><em>The Trial of the Chicago 7</em></a> honoree Aaron Sorkin: “He can have seven men talking, but it feels like 100 men talking.” Toward the end of their mercifully concise intro, they even addressed the elephant in the ballroom: accusations that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which administers the Globes, has a racial representation problem. “We all know that awards shows are stupid,” Fey admitted. “But the point is, even with stupid things, inclusivity is important.” At a time when it’s hard to get worked up about little gold statues, it was the right chord to strike.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, the damage had been done long before Fey and Poehler stepped onto their color-coordinated stages. For years, the awards-industrial complex has faced credible accusations of racism, sexism, provincialism, commercialism, devaluing real art, gamifying creativity, ruining theatrical-release calendars and more. But the HFPA—a mysterious 87-member organization known for its idiosyncratic choices—has an even shakier claim on authority than the other major entertainment awards, which at least reflect the tastes of much larger and more legitimate voting bodies.</p>
<p>That was before the recent <a href="latimes.com/entertainment-arts/business/story/2021-02-21/hfpa-golden-globes-2021">L.A. <em>Times</em> exposé</a> that probed the HFPA’s apparent conflicts of interest, self-dealing, culture of expensive freebies (including a lavish junket for one of 2021’s shoddiest nominees, <em>Emily in Paris</em>) and other ethically shady practices. Widespread <a href="https://time.com/5935604/golden-globes-nominations-snubs-surprises-2021/">frustration</a> over the lack of best picture nominations for standout Black ensemble films like <em>Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom</em>, <em>Judas and the Black Messiah</em>, <em>One Night in Miami</em> and <em>Da 5 Bloods</em> heralded confirmation that the group had <a href="https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/business/story/2021-02-21/hfpa-golden-globes-2021-who-are-the-members" target="_blank">zero Black members</a>. Those snubs felt extra infuriating in light of nods for <em><a href="https://time.com/5942094/sia-music-disability-representation/">Music</a></em> and <em><a href="https://time.com/5920026/meryl-streep-comedy/">The Prom</a></em>, two musicals that have been called out for being offensive as well as just plain bad. And a brief segment of the ceremony in which three HFPA officials offered wooden apologies and promises to create “an environment where diversity is the norm” didn’t inspire much confidence that meaningful change was in the works for the organization.</p>

<p>Add to those scandals a COVID-necessitated virtual telecast that precluded both the usual pleasures of watching glitzily attired famous people get trashed together and the fashion show that is the red carpet (though this didn’t stop E! from airing four hours of pre-show coverage), and even the most nihilistic sort of enjoyment felt elusive. Sure, there were bright spots, like <a href="https://time.com/5940766/golden-globes-winners-2021/">big wins</a> for <a href="https://time.com/5888121/nomadland-review-frances-mcdormand/"><em>Nomadland</em></a> and its director <a href="https://time.com/collection/time100-next-2021/5937710/chloe-zhao/">Chloé Zhao</a>, <a href="https://time.com/5901699/queens-gambit-review-netflix/"><em>The Queen’s Gambit</em></a> and the late <em>Ma Rainey</em> star <a href="https://time.com/5884740/chadwick-boseman-obit/">Chadwick Boseman</a>, whose wife Taylor Simone Ledward accepted his award with tearful grace. Two genuine mensches, <a href="https://time.com/5932112/all-in-the-family-anniversary/">Norman Lear</a> and <a href="https://time.com/5400822/jane-fonda-hbo-documentary-activist/">Jane Fonda</a>, took home lifetime achievement accolades—and Fonda used her time to shout out recent works that challenged her, such as the brilliant, notoriously snubbed-by-the-Globes <a href="https://time.com/5844881/i-may-destroy-you-hbo-review/"><em>I May Destroy You</em></a>. On a lighter note, Sacha Baron Cohen made the most of his <a href="https://time.com/5902851/borat-subsequent-moviefilm-review/"><em>Borat</em></a> victories, joking that his co-star of sorts, Rudy Giuliani, subsequently starred in “hits like <em>Four Seasons Landscaping</em>, <em>Hair Dye Another Day</em> and the courtroom drama <em>A Very Public Fart</em>.” Many nominees logged on with adorable children (<a href="https://time.com/5942621/minari-review/"><em>Minari</em></a> writer-director Lee Isaac Chung’s daughter!) or pets (Jodie Foster’s dog!) by their side. Every TV special should be legally required to include at least a few seconds of <a href="https://time.com/5906947/maya-rudolph-kamala-harris/">Maya Rudolph</a> singing in a sparkly caftan.</p>
<p>The thing is, there’s only so much you can do to <em>zhuzh</em> up an event that most celebrities have to join via video chat, because it’s happening in the midst of a pandemic that has killed more than 500,000 Americans. A three-hour Zoom meeting with appearances by <a href="https://time.com/5835131/the-great-hulu-review/">Elle Fanning</a> and <a href="https://time.com/collection/100-most-influential-people-2019/5567860/regina-king/">Regina King</a> in evening gowns is, alas, still a three-hour Zoom meeting—which is to say, it’s riddled with technical difficulties and not exactly an escapist treat for a nation with Zoom fatigue. Tuning in becomes even less enticing when you’re aware that the party is not only thrown by, but also serves to reinforce the cultural standing of an organization with much to answer for—and when the nominees comprise a seemingly random mix of good and bad art.</p>
<p>No matter how the ratings shake out, the Golden Globes will air on NBC, which struck an <a href="https://deadline.com/2018/09/nbc-golden-globes-8-year-deal-1202464911/" target="_blank">eight-year deal</a> to lock down that privilege in 2018, for the foreseeable future. Yet it will be fascinating to see what effect this year’s revelations—and next year’s likely return to in-person awards ceremonies—will have on potential big-name hosts and guests. Will they be skittish about supporting an increasingly controversial institution without knowing what else will come to light? Or will relief at the prospect of a traditional, champagne-drunk, red-carpeted Globes reawaken the enthusiasm of Hollywood types and audiences alike, allowing the questionably accountable HFPA to power through to another decade of relevance? “If we play our cards right, it might be the last awards show ever!” <a href="https://youtu.be/oWGqrVRI9iE" target="_blank">Fey enthused</a> in one of this year’s promos. If only that had been a promise, not a joke.</p>

<p>ISLAMABAD — The United States wasted billions of dollars in war-torn Afghanistan on buildings and vehicles that were either abandoned or destroyed, according to a report released Monday by a U.S. government watchdog.</p>
<p>The agency said it reviewed $7.8 billion spent since 2008 on buildings and vehicles. Only $343.2 million worth of buildings and vehicles “were maintained in good condition,” said the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, or SIGAR, which oversees American taxpayer money spent on the protracted conflict.</p>
<p>The report said that just $1.2 billion of the $7.8 billion went to pay for buildings and vehicles that were used as intended.<br /></p>

<p>“The fact that so many capital assets wound up not used, deteriorated or abandoned should have been a major cause of concern for the agencies financing these projects,” John F. Sopko, the special inspector general, said in his report.</p>
<p>The U.S. public is weary of the nearly 20-year-old war and President Joe Biden is reviewing a peace deal his predecessor, Donald Trump, signed with the Taliban a year ago. He must decide whether to withdraw all troops by May 1, as promised in the deal, or stay and possibly prolong the war. Officials say no decision has been made.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Taliban insurgents and the Afghan government have been holding on-again-off-again talks in the Gulf Arab state of Qatar but a deal that could bring peace to Afghanistan after 40 years of relentless war seems far off.</p>
<p>Analyst Bill Roggio of the Long War Journal said the findings by SIGAR are not surprising. The reasons for the financial losses include Taliban attacks, corruption and “throwing money at the problem without considering the implications,” he said.</p>
<p>“It is one thing to build a clinic and school, it is another to operate, maintain, and in many cases defend this infrastructure from Taliban attacks,” said Roggio. “Additionally, the West has wildly underestimated the impact of Afghan corruption and in many cases incompetence. It was always a recipe for failure.”</p>
<p>U.S. agencies responsible for construction didn’t even ask the Afghans if they wanted or needed the buildings they ordered built, or if they had the technical ability to keep them running, Sopko said in his report.</p>
<p>The waste occurred in violation of “multiple laws stating that U.S. agencies should not construct or procure capital assets until they can show that the benefiting country has the financial and technical resources and capability to use and maintain those assets effectively,” he said.</p>
<p>Torek Farhadi, a former adviser to the Afghan government, said a “donor-knows-best” mentality often prevailed and it routinely meant little to no consultation with the Afghan government on projects.</p>
<p>He said a lack of coordination among the many international donors aided the wastefulness. For example, he said schools were on occasion built alongside other newly constructed schools financed by other donors. The construction went ahead because once the decision was made — contract awarded and money allocated — the school was built regardless of the need, said Farhadi.</p>
<p>The injection of billions of dollars, largely unmonitored, fueled runaway corruption among both Afghans and international contractors. But experts say that despite the waste, the need for assistance is real, given the Afghan governments heavy dependence on international money.</p>
<p>The worsening security situation in Afghanistan also greatly impeded the monitoring of projects, with shoddy construction going undetected, said Farhadi, the former Afghan government adviser.</p>
<p>“Consult with the locals about their needs and sustainability of the project once the project is complete,” he urged U.S. funding agencies looking to future projects. “Supervise, supervise, supervise project progress and implementation and audit every single layer of expenditure.”</p>
<p>Going forward, Roggio said smaller, more manageable projects should be the order of the day. To build big unmanageable projects that Afghanistan has neither the capacity nor technical expertise for after 40 years of relentless war “feeds into the Taliban narrative that the government is corrupt, incompetent, and incapable of providing for the Afghan people,” he said.</p>

<p>“Oh my god. Are we on?” Dan Levy asked halfway through the <a href="https://time.com/5935604/golden-globes-nominations-snubs-surprises-2021/">78th Annual Golden Globes</a>. It was an apt question for a show that unfolded in fits and glitches, with celebrities delivering strained <a href="https://time.com/5816075/zoom-privacy/">Zoom</a> smiles as well as jokes that reverberated in empty living rooms. <div class="p-rich_text_section">In an interesting gambit (of the non-<a href="https://time.com/5901699/queens-gambit-review-netflix/">queen variety</a>), the Golden Globes decided to beam in its hosts<span style="font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;">—</span>Tina Fey and Amy Poehler<span style="font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;">—</span>from opposite coasts, with Fey presenting at the Beverly Hilton and Poehler at the Rainbow Room in Manhattan. The decision was likely informed by a desire to reflect the fractured nature of the year, as well as to nab both L.A. and N.Y.-based celebrities to present awards. But when it came to the monologue as well as Fey and Poehler’s subsequent bits, the ploy felt like a self-inflicted mistake. In past years, Fey and Poehler have excelled at hosting the Globes precisely because of the way they supported and enabled each other while shoulder to shoulder, giggling as if they were the only ones in the room or throwing back high fives. And while they tried to make it work, their chemistry and timing were noticeably off. With limited audiences to absorb their jokes, Poehler and Fey rushed through punchlines, sometimes inadvertently stepping on each other. With their celebrity targets not in the room, some of their industry-specific barbs fell flat, receiving only uncomfortable chuckles from the first responders in the crowd.(Fey did sneak in a sick burn of the HFPA, however: “The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is made up of around 90 international no-black journalists who attend movie junkets each year in search of a better life.“) While Poehler and Fey are two of the funniest comedians in America, this monologue probably won’t be going on their highlight reels.</div>

The first acceptance speech of the night, in which <a href="https://time.com/5936563/judas-and-the-black-messiah-review/">Daniel Kaluuya</a> found himself unable to unmute his microphone and then repeatedly yelled, “You’re doing me dirty!” was a harbinger of things to come. Poehler and Fey were at times on a delay with each other, leading to awkward moments like “Ladies and gentleman, the absolutely<span style="font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;">—</span>NORMAN LEAR!” Microphones clipped; cameras flickered; there were blips, echoes and freezes. Award winners were unsure of when to start speaking and when to end. <div class="p-rich_text_section">Some of the show’s best moments played like <em>SNL.</em> skits, whether it was Jason Sudeikis’ loopy hoodie-clad acceptance speech or Tracy Morgan’s yelp of “SAUL!” (when he meant to say <em>Soul</em>). Perhaps the funniest moment of the whole show was when two of Studio 8H’s foremost legends<span style="font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;">—</span>Kenan Thompson and <a href="https://time.com/5906947/maya-rudolph-kamala-harris/">Maya Rudolph</a><span style="font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;">—</span>came out in person to flirt, sing and speak gibberish while accepting the fake award “Least Original Song.” In regular years, the weirdest jokes at awards shows often only receive strained laughter from a buttoned-up A-list audience. <div class="p-rich_text_section">Celebrities: they’re just as awkward as us in Zoom meetings! Before every commercial break, the five nominees in the next category were put onscreen and given no prompts or instructions, leading to some excruciating mugging and small talk. Only one of those segments paid any dividends: after Tracy Morgan botched reading the name of the movie <em>Soul</em>, the camera immediately cut to a group including Jason Sudeikis, Don Cheadle and Ramy Youssef, who began gleefully rehashing the moment and riffing off his blunder (“Soul’s Pizzeria!,” Sudeikis exclaimed).</div>

Amy Poehler: “I think it’s the best of all the Trial of Chicago movies, but still not as good as <i data-stringify-type="italic">Police Academy 7: Mission in Moscow</i>.” Fey: “The thing I love about Aaron Sorkin’s writing is he can have seven men talking, but it feels like 100 men talking.” Rudolph and Thompson: “The seven of us, making friends, we’re different, but we all talk the same.” Sorkin, shown sitting in his home which unsurprisingly included an old-timey gramophone, seemed to take them in stride.</div>

<p>The trauma of this year has underscored the fundamental ridiculousness and superfluousness of awards shows. Over the past year, awards ceremonies have tried, mostly unsuccessfully, to provide escapism while simultaneously confronting the pandemic’s devastating impacts. Many solemn, canned statements about loss and perseverance have been delivered by celebrities in their lavish homes<span style="font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;">—</span>and those have mostly rung hollow. But there was nothing contrived about Taylor Simone Ledward’s speech as she accepted the award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for her late husband, Chadwick Boseman. Earlier in the show, the <i data-stringify-type="italic">Black Panther</i> star had received a touching micro-tribute from a group of enthusiastic and adoring school children. And Ledward, through tears, delivered a beautiful speech that served both to honor him individually and to speak to the unimaginable collective grief hanging over many. “I don’t have his words,” she said. “But we have to take all the moments to celebrate those we love…Hon, you keep ’em coming.”</p>

Her speech centered on diversity and representation in storytelling, and was especially pointed in the midst of a ceremony whose awards are decided upon by a voting body (the HFPA) with no Black members. She also went out of her way to pay tribute to <i data-stringify-type="italic">I May Destroy You</i>, the Michaela Coel show which was shut out of the ceremonies despite universal acclaim. “There’s a story we’ve been afraid to see and hear about ourselves in this industry; a story about which voices we respect and elevate and which we tune out. A story about who’s offered a seat at the table and who is kept out of the rooms where decisions are made,” she said. “Let’s all of us make an effort to expand that tent so that everyone rises and everyone’s story has a chance to be seen and heard… Let’s be leaders.”</div>

<p>YANGON, Myanmar — Security forces in Myanmar opened fire and made mass arrests Sunday as they sought to break up protests against the military’s seizure of power, and a U.N. human rights official said it had “credible information” that 18 people were killed and 30 were wounded.</p>
<p>That would be the highest single-day death toll among protesters who are demanding that the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi be restored to power after being ousted by a Feb. 1 coup.</p>
<p>“Deaths reportedly occurred as a result of live ammunition fired into crowds in Yangon, Dawei, Mandalay, Myeik, Bago and Pokokku,” the U.N. Human Rights Office said in a statement referring to several cities, adding that the forces also used tear gas, flash-bang grenades and stun grenades.<br /></p>

<p>“We strongly condemn the escalating violence against protests in Myanmar and call on the military to immediately halt the use of force against peaceful protesters,” its spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani was quoted saying.</p>

<p>An Associated Press journalist was taken into police custody on Saturday morning while providing news coverage of the protests. The journalist, Thein Zaw, remains in police custody.</p>
<p>The Democratic Voice of Burma reported that as of 5 p.m. in Myanmar, there had been 19 confirmed deaths in nine cities, with another 10 deaths unconfirmed. The independent media company broadcasts on satellite and digital terrestrial television, as well as online.</p>
<p>DVB counted five deaths in Yangon and two in Mandalay, the largest and second-largest cities.</p>
<p>It registered five deaths in Dawei, a much smaller city in southeastern Myanmar that has seen tens of thousands of protesters nearly every day since the coup. Witnesses said Sunday’s march was also large and people were determined not to be driven off the streets.</p>
<p>Confirming the deaths of protesters has been difficult amid the chaos and general lack of news from official sources, especially in areas outside Yangon, Mandalay and the capital of Naypyitaw. But in many cases, photos and video circulated showed circumstances of the killings and gruesome photos of bodies.</p>

<p>Gunfire earlier had been reported during protests in Yangon, as police also fired tear gas and water cannons while trying to clear the streets. Photos of shell casings from live ammunition used in assault rifles were posted on social media.</p>
<p>Initial reports on social media identified one young man believed to have been killed. His body was shown in photos and videos lying on a sidewalk until other protesters carried him away.</p>
<p>In Dawei, local media reported at least three people were killed during a protest march, supported by photos and video. Photos on social media showed one wounded man in the care of medical personnel.</p>
<p>Before Sunday, there had been eight confirmed reports of killings linked to the army’s takeover, according to the independent Assistance Association of Political Prisoners.</p>
<p>The Feb. 1 coup reversed years of slow progress toward democracy after five decades of military rule. Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy party would have been installed for a second five-year term in office, but the army blocked Parliament from convening and detained her and President Win Myint, as well as other top members of Suu Kyi’s government.</p>
<p>On Sunday morning, medical students marched in Yangon near the Hledan Center intersection, which has become the gathering point for protesters who then fan out to other parts of the city.</p>
<p>Videos and photos showed protesters running as police charged at them, and residents setting up makeshift roadblocks to slow their advance. Some protesters managed to throw tear gas canisters back at police. Nearby, residents were pleading with police to release those they picked up from the street and shoved into police trucks to be taken away. Dozens or more were believed to be detained.</p>
<p>“The world is watching the actions of the Myanmar military junta, and will hold them accountable,” said Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director for New York-based Human Rights Watch. “Live ammunition should not be used to control or disperse protests and lethal force can only be used to protect life or prevent serious injury.”</p>
<p>Security forces began employing rougher tactics on Saturday, taking preemptive actions to break up protests and making scores, if not hundreds, of arrests. Greater numbers of soldiers also joined police. Many of those detained were taken to Insein Prison in Yangon’s northern outskirts, historically notorious for holding political prisoners.</p>
<p>According to the Assistance Association of Political Prisoners, as of Saturday, 854 people had been arrested, charged or sentenced at one point in relation to the coup, and 771 were being detained or sought for arrest. The group said that while it had documented 75 new arrests, it understood that hundreds of other people were also picked up Saturday in Yangon and elsewhere.</p>

In the show, which is part of her and husband Barack’s <a href="https://time.com/5809758/crip-camp-review/">producing deal</a> with the streaming service, Obama and a pair of mischievous puppets learn about cooking and food from renowned chefs like <a href="https://time.com/5421575/samin-nosrat/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Samin Nosrat</a> and <a href="https://time.com/collection/apart-not-alone/5809169/jose-andres-coronavirus-food/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">José Andrés</a>. The series drops on March 16.</p>
<p>Documentary fans have plenty to watch in March. The <em>Last Chance U</em> series returns to Netflix on March 10 with a new basketball-themed series that will focus on a team at a junior college in East Los Angeles. Also joining the platform this month? <em>Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal,</em> an original documentary about the <a href="https://time.com/5801167/college-admissions-scandal-changes/#:~:text=In%20the%20year%20since%20more,its%20illegal%20extremes%20and%20a" rel="noopener" target="_blank">2019 college admissions bribery scandal</a> that made headlines after high-profile celebrities like Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin were revealed to be part of it. It will debut on March 17.<br /></p>

<p>LONDON — A World War II-era plane flew Saturday over the funeral service of Captain Tom Moore to honor of the veteran who single-handedly raised millions of pounds for Britain’s health workers by walking laps in his backyard.</p>
<p>Soldiers performed ceremonial duties at the service for the 100-year-old Moore, whose charity walk inspired the nation and raised almost 33 million pounds ($46 million.) Captain Tom, as he became known, died Feb. 2 in the hospital after testing positive for COVID-19.</p>
<p>The private service was small, attended by just eight members of the veteran’s immediate family. But soldiers carried his coffin, draped in the Union flag, from the hearse to a crematorium and formed a ceremonial guard. Others performed a gun salute, before a C-47 Dakota military transport plane flew past.<br /></p>

<p>“Daddy, you always told us ‘Best foot forward’ and true to your word, that’s what you did last year,” Moore’s daughter, Lucy Teixeira, said at the service. “I know you will be watching us chuckling, saying ‘Don’t be too sad as something has to get you in the end.’”</p>
<p>A version of the song “Smile,” recorded for the funeral by singer Michael Bublé, was played, as well as “My Way” by Frank Sinatra, as requested by Moore. A bugler sounded “The Last Post” to close the service.</p>
<p>Moore, who served in India, Burma and Sumatra during World War II set out to raise a modest 1,000 pounds for Britain’s National Health Service by walking 100 laps of his backyard by his 100th birthday last year. But his quest went viral, catching the imagination of millions stuck at home during the first wave of the pandemic.</p>
<p>His positive attitude – “Please remember, tomorrow will be a good day” became his trademark phrase – inspired the nation at a time of crisis. Prime Minister Boris Johnson described him as a “hero in the truest sense of the word.″</p>
<p>He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in July in a socially distanced ceremony at Windsor Castle, west of London.</p>
